The Howards claim as their ancestor Herward the Wake (died 1072) who was of local Mercian background in central England. He resisted the Norman conquest of England from his base at the Isle of Ely, and he has since become a mainstay of English folklore. It is claimed that he was the son of Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva, the nude rider. Ultimately this ancestry traces back to a point of origin in Leicester. While legendary pedigrees trace the family to the 10th century, indisputable descent begins with Sir William Howard (died 1308), a judge who was in the House of Commons in the Parliament of 1295.

Notes for Lt. John Howard Birth reported abt. 1624, Sandwich, Kent, England, son of James Howard and Mary Cooper; link not confirmed. The following is from: 'Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, Massachusetts,' by Edward C. Mitchell, D.D., (Edward Alden: Bridgewater, MA, expanded and reprinted in 1897): "John Howard, with his brother James, came from England and settled in Duxbury; he was among those able to bear arms there in 1643. James, it is said, went to Bermuda, and John came to W. B., and was one of the proprietors and original settlers in the town a. 1651; was young when he came over, and it is said, lived in Capt. Miles Standish's family; was a man of much influence in the new plantation; one of the first military officers in Bridgewater; took the oath of fidelity here 1657; his descendants still own and live on the place where he first settled; he always wrote his name Haward, and so did all his descendants till after 1700, and the early town records are conformable to this spelling; but for the last century it has been invariably written Howard. It is remarkable that the two names of Hayward and Haward, which have always been known as distinct families, were uniformly pronounced alike, Howard. They were perhaps the same originally, and both Hayward ; but, in writing, John omitted the Y. There was supposed to have been some connection between the families, but perhaps it arose altogether from intermarriage, as John m. Martha, D. of Thos. Hayward, and was a younger man even than Thomas Hayward, Jr.'He d. about 1700.'He had John, James, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Sarah, Bethiah, Ephraim.'Elizabeth m. Edward Fobes.' Sarah m. Zaccheus Packard.'Bethiah m. Henry Kingman.' He was licensed to keep an Ordinary or Tavern as early as 1670, and it is remarkable that a public house has been kept there by his descendants ever since till within a few years." The following is from Herman Howard's "Descendants of John Howard," (Privately published, MA, 1903): JOHN HOWARD, with his brother George (also reported as James who went on to Bermuda), came from England. Their widowed mother Mary, and at least one sister, remained in England. He settled in Duxbury at about age 15. He was among those who were able to bear arms there in 1643. He lived in the family of Capt. Miles Standish, who came from Shorely, Lancashire, England. Standish treated him like a son. John soon moved to Bridgewater, and was one of the original settlers and proprietors of that town. He was the first Howard to settle in Bridgewater, was a man of much influence in the new plantation. In 1645 his name appears as one of the 54 original proprietors of the grant of land afterward known as Bridgewater. In 1656 he was one of the two surveyors of highways for his town. In 1657 he had taken the Freeman's oath. He was one of the fourteen men whose allotment of land was in the easterly part of the grant. He was one of the first military officers, and was appointed Ensign on 27 Sept 1664. In May 1676, during King Philip's War, Ensign John Howard, with twenty others, fought with some Indians and took seventeen of them alive with much plunder, and all returned without serious injury. On 5 June 1678 he was a deputy to the General Court of Massachusetts; also on the same date was appointed a selectman of his town. In 1683 he, with Thomas Hayward, was a representative to the General Court. On 2 Oct 1689 he was promoted, and received his commission as a lieutenant. John was a carpenter by trade. He spelled his name Haward, and so did his descendants until after 1700. He lived in a house which he built near the first meeting house. It stood directly north of the house where B. B. Howard now lives [1903], on the corner of Howard and River streets. This was the first public house in Bridgewater, as Mr. Howard was licensed to keep an ordinary or tavern, in 1670, at this place. This house was owned and managed by John Howard and his direct descendants for a period of 151 years. John Howard opened the tavern in 1670, and kept it 30 years, until his death in 1700. His oldest son, John, then became proprietor, conducting it 26 years, until 1726. His son, Maj. Edward, was proprietor from that date to 1771, for 45 years. His son, Col. Edward, owned and conducted the house for 38 years, from 1771 to 1809, when he died. Then his widow and son, Capt. Benjamin Beal Howard, kept the house open 12 years, until 1821. The house was taken down in 1838. A list of the distinguished guests of this tavern, could we know their names, would make exceeding interesting reading. Without doubt, one of the early distinguished visitors was Mary (Chilton) Winslow, (the first lady who came on shore from the Mayflower), who was grandmother of the wife of the second proprietor, John Howard. An occasional guest was John Reed, D. D., who was a member of congress during Washington's administration. Oakes Angier, a young lawyer, Hon. William Baylies and Judge Howard, were other prominent and frequent visitors. Lieut. ---------------------------------------------------------- A true copy of the division of the estate of Lieut. Rev. James Keith and Susanna Edson
1. Rev. James 1 Keith, born 1642/44 in Scotland; died 23 Jul 1719 in West Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA; buried in Old Burial Ground, Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA. He married (1) on 3 May 1668 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA Susanna Edson, born 1639/40 in Salem, Essex Co., MA; died 16 Oct 1705 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA; buried in Old Burial Ground, Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA, daughter of Deacon Samuel Edson and Susanna Orcutt; (2) in 1707 in MA Mary Macey, born abt 1650 in MA, daughter of George Macey and Susanna Street.Notes for Rev. James Keith The Rev. James Keith's parents are unknown. Although reported educated in Aberdeen, Scotland (tradition says paid for by a maiden aunt) he may have been a student from elsewhere. There are only three recorded baptisms in the Scottish parish records which might apply to him: James Keithe baptized 10 Sept 1640 in Aberdeen, son of Gilbert Keithe and Agnes Norie. James Keith baptized 22 Dec 1642 in Uphall/Strathbrock, West Lothian, son of Alexander Keith. James Keyth baptized 19 Mar 1645 in Aberdeen, son of Alexander Keyth and Cristane Kempt. Based on the Scottish naming custom the first daughter and second son are named after the wife's parents, which was here followed for Susanna Edson. This indicates James' first son and second daughter were likely named after his parents, that is James Keith and Mary. No record of a marriage or children from such a couple is known during that time. In that James departed Scotland for the America around 1662 at about age 18 he had little or no college. It may have been that his parents were deceased or he came with friends or family.
The following is from: 'Mitchell's History of Bridgewater, Massachusetts,' by Edward C. Mitchell, D.D., (Edward Alden: Bridgewater, MA, expanded and reprinted in 1897): ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY. 'The first settlements having been in the west parish, the first church was of course formed there, and although social worship on the Sabbath had not probably been omitted or at all neglected, yet having been few in number and feeble in substance, they were at first unable to maintain a minister, and, by thus forming themselves into a regular church, enjoy the full benefit of the Christian institutions. In this situation they remained from 1651 to 1664, a period of a little more than twelve years. They had in the mean time employed a Mr. Bunker, to preach as a candidate, and made him an offer of settlement, which however for some reason not appearing on the records did not take place. They also as early as 1661, agreed and voted to build a house for a minister, who should be called to settle among them, and to give him also an entire purchase right in the township. Feb. 18, 1664, the settlement of the Rev. James Keith, their first ordained minister, is recorded, and the terms of it particularly expressed. He is there called "a student in divinity, having some competent time improved his gifts amongst them in the work of the ministry, and having also due approbation by the testimony of the Rev. Elders of other churches of Christ, to whom he was known." He was a Scotchman, educated at Aberdeen, and probably came to Boston about the year 1662, and was introduced to the church at Bridgewater, by Dr. Increase Mather, whom he always esteemed as his patron and best friend. In the second preface to the "Bridgewater's Monitor," the first having been written by Increase and Cotton Mather, it is said Bridgewater had not an ordained minister till 1663. This had reference to the old style, probably, when the year commenced on the 25th of March. The terms of his settlement were liberal; a double house lot of twelve acres with a house built thereon, and a purchase right, so called, being a fifty-sixth part of the original grant; .£40 annual salary, .£20 to be paid at Boston in money, and the other half at home. In 1667 they gave him an additional grant of thirty cords of wood annually, " the cutters of the wood to have five groats, and the drawers seven groats a cord." In 1681 they raised it from £40 to £50, £20 to be paid at Boston in money, and £30 at home in corn and provisions. In 1689 they agreed to allow him £10 in corn in lieu of his thirty cords of wood. He died July 23, 1719, ae. 76, of course was about 21 when he was ordained. Mather, in the Magnalia, places him in the third class, " who were all such ministers as came over after the re-establishment of the Episcopal church government in England, and the consequent persecution of the non-conformists." This must have been a mistake, as Mr. Keith was from Scotland, and besides could not have been a minister before he came over, being very young and but a student when he arrived. The text he selected for his first sermon was from Jeremiah 1. 6, "Behold I cannot speak ; for I am a child." The Lord however indeed encouraged him, '- and put his words into his mouth," and he proved a worthy man and a faithful shepherd over his infant and feeble flock. His advice and influence with the civil authorities of the colony were also considerable. In the case of the capture of Philip's wife and son, when the question as to what should be done with the son was in agitation, and the opinion of grave divines desired, Mr. Keith's opinion, stated in a letter to the Rev. Mr. Cotton, in favor of mercy, and differing from most others, had great weight, if indeed it was not decisive on the occasion. The boy's life was spared, and with his mother he was sent out of the country, and probably to the Bermudas. The letter follows, and is well worthy of a place here. "October 30, 1676. I long to hear what becomes of Philip's wife and his son. [Note: Phillip was a local Indian. The wife and child of King Phillip were sold into slavery instead of hanged and what happened to them after that is unknown.] I know there is some difficulty in that Psalm 137. 8, 9, though I think it may be considered, whether there be not some speciality and somewhat extraordinary in it. That law, Deut. 24. 16. compared with the commended example of Amazias, 2d Chron., 25. 4, doth sway much with me in the case under consideration. I hope God will direct those whom it doth concern to a good issue. Let us join our prayers at the throne of grace with all our might, that the Lord would so dispose of all public motions and affairs, that his Jerusalem in this w1lderness may be the habitation of justice, and the mountain of holiness, that so it may be also a quiet habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down." He preached the sermon at the dedication of the new meeting house in South Bridgewater in 1717, two years only before his death, which was printed in the " Bridgewater's Monitor," and which contains some pertinent and impressive remarks on the subject of intemperance even at that early period. " Besides other evils," said he, " which might be mentioned, I would refer particularly to that of intemperance, the excessive and prodigious expense upon strong drink, above all, that of rum; I say, the scandalous and horrible abuse of rum, which threatens ruin unto this land and to this place; a ruin to all our dearest interests, both civil and religious. If there be any such houses among you, as I fear there are, that vend that strong drink contrary to the law of God and the wholesome law of this province, let such of you as are vested with civil power and stand obliged unto the oath of God, see that such grievous profanation be suppressed, lest that iniquity, the abuse of rum, be our ruin." His posterity have been, and still are, very numerous. The names of two hundred of them in Bridgewater, alone appear on a late census; and there are a great many also in Middleborough, Easton, Mendon, Maine, and other parts of the United States. Israel Keith, formerly Adjutant General of the Commonwealth was one of his descendants. William Brett, among the first planters of the town, was a ruling elder in the church, ordained soon after Mr. Keith, and probably aided and assisted them in their public worship from the commencement of their settlement, and even after the ordination of Mr. Keith. He was a well educated and intelligent man as is manifest from his letters to Gov. Winslow, still extant, and was much esteemed by his brethren, and often employed in their secular affairs. - The following extract, bearing testimony to the worth and good character of the church and its officers, is taken from the early church records of Plymouth. " The worthy church of Christ at Bridgewater have for their pastor Mr. James Keith, who came by the wise disposing hand of Providence out of Scotland. William Brett, a grave and godly man, is their ruling elder; and John Willis, their deacon, a good man and one that hath proved himself faithful. They carry on in a way of peace, holiness, and good gospel order." The Rev. Daniel Perkins, successor of Mr. Keith, was ordained October 4, 1721. He was a native of Topsfield, in the county of Essex, and graduated at Harvard University 1717. He died September 29, 1782, ru. 86th, and in the 62d year of his ministry, which was not long only, but peaceful and efficacious.'
The following is from Appleton's "Cyclopaedia of American biography," (1840): 'James Keith, clergyman, was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, Scotland, reportedly at the expense of a maiden aunt. He came to Boston, MA in 1662 at age 18. He became the first ordained minister of the church at Bridgewater on February 18, 1664. Mather in the "Magnalia," places him in the third class "who were all such ministers who came over after the re-establishment of the Episcopal Church government in England, and the consequent persecution of the non-conformists." His pastorate continued until his death, a period of over a half-century. In 1717, at the dedication of the new meeting house in South Bridgewater he preached the dedicatory sermon, which was published in the "Bridgewater Monitor," and in which he spoke on the subject of intemperance. He owned a one fifty-sixth proprietary interest in all the lands at Bridgewater. Mr. Keith had much to do with saving the life of the wife and son of the Indian chief, King Phillip in 1676. His letter on King Phillip's family is printed in the "History of Bridgewater" by Nahum Mitchell.' Rev. James Keith home was located in West Bridgewater on the north side of River Street, near the crossing of Forest Street. It was originally built in 1662, enlarged in 1678, and remodeled in 1837. James' tombstone inscription reads: Here lies the body of the Rev. Mr. James Keith, died July 23, 1719, aged 76 years.

John settled in Joppa in East Bridgewater, and lived on the spot where Deacon Keene afterward lived. While there, his father and friends at West Bridgewater would speak of Joppa as, "down at John's," "John's bridge," "John's river," so that these designations were later adopted in the records. After the death of his father, he sold his house and farm to his uncle Edward Mitchell in 1703, and went back to West Bridgewater to live. He inherited from his father, his house and barn, together with a large tract of land, and various lots of outlying land. He occupied the house, and conducted it as a tavern until 1726. He was representative to the General Court in 1723. Mary Keith "was courted by Ephraim Howard, not much to the acceptance of the old minister [Rev. James Keith, who, in 1688, was all of 45]. Notwithstanding his objection they were secretly married, and were pursued by the irate father. Arriving too late to prevent their marriage, he returned, and, complying with the prevailing custom, preached the following Sabbath from Hosea 4:17-"Ephraim is joined to idols let him alone." Time, however, softened his spirit, and the reconciliation which followed inclined him to preach from Jeremiah 31:20-"Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For since I spake against him I do earnestly remember him still". Keith, Ziba, "Genealogy of the Keith family," Brockton, MA: Goodall, 1889. p. 13-14 Name sometimes reported as Elisha. In 1850 Howard farmed in Verona Township, Oneida Co., NY (page 185); the value of his property was $300. At home were Deborah, Horace, 24, Charles, 23, Harry, 18, Edwin, 16, Selestia, 13, and M. H. age 23 from NY. Next door was John H. Pease, age 53 from VT, and family. In the 1855 NY State Census (page 51) Tisdale (66, born in New Hampshire [?], married, resided in town 41 years [1814], farmer, voter, owner of land) lived in a frame construction home worth $450 with his wife Deborah (63, wife, born in Washington County, NY), son Horace L. (25, voter), daughter Elizabeth A. (17), daughter-in-law Mary J. (28 VT), and grand-daughter Hannah M. (1). In 1860 he farmed in Verona Township, Oneida Co. (page 790); the value of his land was $4,000 and personal property of $600. At home were Deborah, Harry S., a farm laborer age 28, Martha, 16 from NY (daughter or wife of Harry?), and Edward Wilman, age 15 from Switzerland. On 12 Feb 1862 he wrote about leaving money to Justin V., Desdemona A., and to Harriet, as well as to Charles' children and Edwin. Elizabeth C. is to have the furniture. Mentions the death of old Mr. Frazee, George Williams and John Newcomb (just alive). The letter was written from Durhamville in Verona Township, Oneida Co. NY. Two more daughters appear in the 1835 census, born between 1819 and 1835. In 1835 he owned 50 acres, 12 cattle, 9 sheep, and 6 hogs. With the family next door lived Abram Howard, a farm laborer, 24 from NY. Tisdale died at age 81 years, 8 months, and 9 days. ---------------------------------------------------- Letter written by Tisdale from Durhamville, NY on 2-12-1862 I've your letter of last week & in answer I would say: my health is some better. I have to cough much yet & am not able to do anything of the work kind. As to our business matters: I wish to do right. If I do not have a will, all will come in for an equal share, now John has had two hundred & twenty dollars in money & he gave his notes for $39 to his hands on the boat & sign my name to them. I told them to go to New York and put an attachment on the boat. They did so and had to pay $51. I scolded him on that and he replied he had a right so to do: when Harry came home he said let him go, so I withdrew: there remains a claim against me of probably $130 on that boat which will have to be paid or have a lawsuit. So you see John has had more than $360 and now George Low offers to take the property and pay the debts and maintain me and pay the funeral charges and fulfill a will in the following order: to you we send $25 sometime in the ensuing summer that is to pay your expense down here last fall. Then $200 after my decease and $200 to Justin V., $100 to Desdimona A. and $100 to Harriet, $100 to each of Charle's children and $300 to Edwin and to Harry $600 and as much more as he can afford after setting the debts. Elizabeth C. is to have all the household furniture. This is about as I have made up my mind to do. Now if you can get up a will that will be any more just or equal please write soon. If you are satisfied and think that is about right send them. Note is and we will send the $25 as soon as convenient. If I have wirtten so you can read and understand my meaning. You think it proper for you to come down here, you had better come soon for life is very uncertain at best. Old Mr. Frazee was buried last week and George Williams last week and John Newcomb is but just alive, and now because my letter I am tired and have the headache and I have had more of the complaint in three weeks than I ever had in all my life and now may your conduct for the remaining part of your life be [?] your conscience shall approve and merit the approbation of Heaven. This is the best wish of your friend & Father. Tisdale Howard Notes for Deborah Pease At the time of her death Deborah lived with her daughter, Elizabeth Low in Eckford, Calhoun Co, MI. He married Tryphena Gifford, born 18 Jun 1817 in Schoharie Co., NY; died 10 May 1896 in Franklinville, Cattaraugus Co., NY.Notes for Benjamin Howard Moved to Franklinville, New York in 1840. Listed as a lumberman and farmer, living on the Hinsdale Road #13. Ben Howard lived in a house on the corner of Cherry and Chestnut Streets, and in 1880 began a milk route. From The Chronicle, Friday July 23, 1897. "The death of Benjamin Howard which occurred at his home on Chestnut Street, in this village last Tuesday evening, removed one of the conspicuous characters in the early history of Franklinville and Cattaraugus County. He was 80 years of age last December. Positive historical data concerning Mr. Howard is hard to find and the few facts given below were not positively set on the statements here published most of which are but recollections. He came to this town from Schoharie County in the early forties - about 1842 - and moved into the old hotel on the north west corner of the cross roads at Cadiz, then the rival of this village for the business of the town and for several years he ran the hotel. This was on one of the much travelled thoroughfares for stages between Pike and Ellicottville and from Olean Points to Buffalo and the old house was one of the principal stopping places on the route. It is said that hardly a day passed but that 40 or 50 teams loaded with goods going between Olean and Buffalo stopped at Mr. Howard's hotel. He was a hard worker and saved some money while landlord there, and a few years later moved into this village and bought the old Major Partridge property which included hundreds of acres of almost vacant farm land east of the present village park. The western angle of this is now covered by the First Bank, the Chronicle office and adjacnet buildings. This farm reached to the foot of Kingsbury Hill and included cemetery hill and all lands between on that side of Chestnut street to the center of the village. He was a money maker in a way, owning the stage route to Hinsdale and other points hereabouts, as well as being as extensive dealer in cattle. When the Erie road was first built through from New York to Dunkirk, Howard bought and ran the old McKee Hotel at Hinsdale, the nearest point to this place which the road passed. There and in Allegany he also bought considerable timber land. These ventures were not very successful and marked the turning point of his financial career. On them he lost money heavily. Before those investments he was reputed to be worth from $10,000 upwards which at that time was considered a fabulous sum, but it stayed by him but a short time, and about 23 years ago he was reduced to almost poverty. He was a good hearted, liberal friend and by this fault - if it is a fault - many financial troubles were brought upon him. His entire life from the time he came from Schoharie County has been spent in this village where he and his wife had many friends because of the neighborly and considerate qualities which they possessed. Five years ago he was running a mowing machine in a meadow upon which shortly before a circus tent had been pitched. A tent stake had been left in the ground and the machine on which he was riding was upset throwing him forcibly to the ground. His hip was severely shattered, causing a trouble from which he never fully recovered. His wife died in May of last year and since then he has been gradually failing in strength. His mind was active to the last and notwithstanding the many unfortunate circumstances of his latter days he was the same genial Ben Howard at 80 as he was earlier in life when fortune was smiling pleasantly upon him. A family of six children survive him." Children of Benjamin Howard and Tryphena Gifford were as follows: + 289 i Frederick

HOWARD -- Russell Marshall Howard, one of the early settlers of East Eckford (Calhoun Co., MI), and a highly esteemed citizen of that locality up to a few years ago, when be removed to Redfield, S. Dakota, died February 18, 1893, of diabetes. The Redfield Journal-Observer says: "An old and respected citizen, a kind and loving father has gone to his rest. Russell M. Howard was born in Schoharie County, N.Y. February 10, 1813, and was just 80 years and 8 days old at the time of his death. His boyhood days were spent in New York state and he removed with his parents to Oneida county, the same state, and lived there for a number of years. In 1849 he decided to start out into the world for himself and came west, locating in Michigan. He finally settled down in Calhoun county, that state. In 1850 he was married to Emeline Morse, who died here in October, 1889. He came to Dakota in January, 1883, and located in Redfield. Shortly afterward he took up a homestead in Faulk county, which he finally transferred to his only surviving daughter, Mrs. W. H. Smith, of Faulk county. Mr. Howard always took a great deal of interest in the political affairs of the nation. He was one of the original old line whigs, having been one of the first in the organization of the republican party in Michigan. He had been in failing health ever since the death of his faithful companion of many years, whose loss he keenly felt because of physical infirmities. As the junior member of Hatch & Howard, he has been in business here for some years, though not actively engaged about the store. He leaves a daughter and son to mourn his loss, the former, Mrs. W. H. Smith, of Faulk county, and Chas. T. Howard our honored townsman." Notes for Emeline A. Perry is a town in eastern Wyoming County (Mich.) From obituary in the Redfield (So. Dak.) Journal, Nov. 8, 1889: " Mrs. Howard was loved and admired by all who knew her. In early girlhood she united with the church and led a life of Christian beauty. Kind, sympathetic, lovable and beloved, she leaved behind her memories of good deeds done and kind, cheering words spoken to those around her who needed help, sympathy and encouragement. None will miss her gentle care and kindly encouragement more than her life-partner to whom she has for 40 years been a source of joy and comfort, especially so since he years ago became a sufferer from rheumatic troubles that have seriously impaired his physical being. Her life work is ended and the Master has said, "Well done, good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the Lord," Children of Russell Marshall Howard and Emeline A. Star-News (Pasadena, California), 18 Mar 1959 - Mother of 3 Garroted in Fresno Home Children Find Her Body in Closet; Police Hunt Husband Fresno, Calif. - UPI - The nude body of an attractive mother of three small children was found garroted with a man's long woolen sock in her home her early today. The body of Mrs. Shirley Ann Burgess, 29, had been stuffed into a bathroom closet in the two-bedroom home. The body was discovered by her eldest child, Steve, 7, after being awakened by his sisters, Janine, 4, and Rebecca, nine months. Mrs. Burgess' husband, Robert, about 30, was identified as a truck driver. His semi-truck and trailer rig was seen at the home late yesterday. Burgess' employer reported he left Fresno late last night on a hauling job to Southern California. Police alerted authorities there to take Burgess into custody for questioning. The murder was reported to police at 2 a.m. by a neighbor W. D. Jessee. He was awakened by persistent ringing of his doorbell. When he went to the door he said he found Steve and his two sisters. 'My mommie's in the closet. I think she's dead,' Jessee quoted Steve as saying. Steve told officers Janine, who slept with him in the rear bedroom, awoke because it was hot in the house and began asking for water. He said he went into the front bedroom and found Rebecca playing in her crib alongside his parent's empty bed. He searched through the house and eventually found his mother's body. Steve and Janine said they had heard no noises during the night and when asked the whereabouts of Burgess, Steve replied, 'he's gone far away.' Deputy Coroner Alpherd Dickinson said there were no signs of a struggle in the house. He said an examination of the body fixed the time of death between 10 p.m. and midnight. Steve told officers he and his sisters were put to bed by their mother about 7:30 o'clock last night. 'They' said letters found in the house indicated Mrs. Burgess had been married previously to a sailor identified as John Alvin McBriar. They said Steve was a child of that marriage. Officers described the victim as a 'small, good-looking woman.' They said she kept a neat house and the children were apparently well-cared for. The children were taken to the home of Mrs. Burgess' mother. MARRIAGE: Divorced in 1954. Notes for John Alvin McBriar John served in the US Military and retired on 3 July 1968.
